The community of Chatfield Reservoir, Colorado is mourning the death of Aric Whitacre, the 18-year-old swimmer whose body was recovered after a heartbreaking search at the reservoir. Whitacre disappeared in the water near the Catfish Flats area on the west side of Chatfield Reservoir on Friday afternoon, sparking a days-long rescue and recovery effort.

According to reports, Whitacre was swimming with another person when both encountered trouble in the water. The second swimmer was rescued by a nearby boater, but Aric did not resurface. Search crews returned to the reservoir daily, using divers, sonar, drones, a helicopter, cadaver dogs, and remote-operated equipment before his body was located about 50 yards from shore in 17 feet of water on Wednesday morning.

Family and friends publicly identified the missing teen as Aric Whitacre before authorities completed the recovery. Officials said foul play is not suspected, while the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is expected to formally confirm his cause and manner of death. His passing has added to a devastating run of water-related fatalities in Colorado this year.
